Description: Collaboration with Crow Bryggeri - Nils Hansen Crowlaboration (Imperial Stout): Sometimes you need a little push or an outside point of view to do something a little different. Before this the strongest beer we had produced was 8?v, so I was looking to swinging at the fences and brew a really strong beer, but the inspiration for this beer came from a different source. If you haven't heard of them, Nils Hansen is a pair of up and coming home brewers, Tommy Bratseth and Bjørn Harald Færøvik. I say 'up and coming' because anybody who has their branding prepared already (see: https://www.facebook.com/NilsHansenAles) and will soon be in the Vinmonopolet has a serious hard-on for brewing. What? You didn't see the article with them in Dagbladet? (http://www.dagbladet.no/2013/08/02/nyheter/mat_og_drikke/hobby/fritid/28495448/) So we thought it would be fun to do a brew day together. These guys came in with a lot of big ideas and the theme for the beer turned out to be blending. We had an interesting blend of specialty malt between wheat, rye and oat malt along with a blend of roasted malts for colouring (Carafa type I, pale chocolate malt and roasted barley). The yeast used was also a blend between US05 and S04 from Fermentis. Maybe it was even a blend of cultures between homebrewing and production brewing, too. The result was this 'young' imperial stout at 10?v. This is a bit of a monster and could do with a bit of aging to smooth out the alcohol bite, but is still drinkable now. There is considerable body and sweetness from all of the malts, but the interesting thing is how much the hops come through. We were not trying to feature the hops, but had an IBU in the 50s. The aroma of the Colombus really comes through in the flavour. This was justification enough for me to release it so young (just before 4-weeks old). Hopefully we can keg off some of it to see what it tastes like in a few months, but no promises. The beer will be on tap tomorrow afternoon (5.sept). - Dave the Brewer
