Description: What is a Black IPA you ask? It’s a bit of a bizarre mashup between the malt bill of a dark beer, like a porter or stout, and a hop dosage similar to an IPA. Like many mashups, the final product is far more interesting than the sum of its parts. Our Thomas Beck, named for the South Side street that we call home, is built on a malt bill that contributes notes of chocolate and caramel alongside a subtle spice of rye. That base is complemented by a generous amount of hops headlined by the New Zealand all-star Nelson Sauvin, which brings a bright punch of pineapple and tropical fruit to the show. Together, they produce a taste that is unlike any other style of beer: smooth, rich, a touch decadent, and well balanced without being too sweet or overly bitter. Whether you are a fan of dark beers or IPAs (or you don’t particularly care for either) you owe it to yourself to give this totally unique style a try. We’ll certainly be enjoying it for as long as it lasts. Cheers!
