Description: Collaboration between Capital Brewery, The Great Dane, Vintage Brewing Co, and Lake Louie Brewing. Common Thread is an amber lager in the California Common style, which is also known as "steam beer". This uniquely American style traces its origins to gold-rush era California brewing, where lagers were fermented at much higher, ale-like temperatures of necessity. When finished, Common Thread will be medium-bodied, clean and crisp, with toasty, caramelly malt notes, restrained yet distinctive Northern Brewer hop flavors and a slightly fruity aroma from the signature warm lager fermentation. We expect to end up around 5.0% abv. Appropriate for the California Common style, we expect an engaging but not distracting medium bitterness level of about 38-40 on the IBU (international bitterness units) scale. With all local ingredients, Common Thread is better described as a "Wisconsin Common" beer: Our pilsner-type base malt was 100% Wisconsin-grown, coming from Bo Belanger at South Shore Brewing in Ashland. Our Munich and caramel-type specialty malts were all Wisconsin-malted at Briess Malting in Chilton. And were happy to have used 100% Gorst Valley hops from nearby Mazomanie, Wisconsin. We even got James the grower to toss hops into the kettle for us. Can a beer exhibit flavors of local "terroir"? If so, we're pleased to let the best of Wisconsin hops and malt shine through in Common Thread!
