Description: After a couple of years without a black IPA, the Roots to Boots program brought two to the table in short order, this one following quickly on the heels of Sooty Grunter. Named after the part of the ocean into which no light enters, this beer is as black as midnight. If there can be polar opposites within a narrowly-defined style category, Aphotic Zone and Sooty Grunter would be exactly that. While the Grunter was boozy and black but with next to no roastiness, Aphotic Zone is on the low end of the IPA category and roasty almost to the point of drinking like a porter. Savory, rich, and powerfully hop forward (but not overly bitter) due to a large Cascade, Amarillo, and Simcoe dry hop, this beer will perplex you with its complexity- but
